The Rev. Kelly Van Brouwer
Minister of Member Engagement and Pastoral Care
Rev. Kelly Van Brouwer joined our staff in August of 2016. Kelly, her wife Sandy and her two young children Kyah and Norah moved to Grand Rapids from Chicago in November of 2015. Sandy, a Nurse Practioner, grew up here and took a job at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital to start a Pediatric Palliative Program. One of their first priorities was to find just the right church. Kelly, especially, was anxious about finding that church in Grand Rapids, but after only visiting one other church, found Park Church. “We’d seen the church sign, “Progressive yet Traditional”. We were both surprised and wondered if this could be true. The next Sunday, we went and have been going ever since.”
Kelly grew up on a farm in Southwest Minnesota as one of 5 children. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA followed by her Master’s in Divinity from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI.
Ordained in 2005, Kelly has spent the last 11 years dividing her career between Chaplaincy and Church Ministry. She spent 7 years total working as a Chaplain at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL and 4 years in Church Ministry, mostly at First United Church in Oak Park, IL. When she moved here, she accepted a part-time Chaplaincy position at Spectrum Health. Once learning about the positions of Membership Engagement and Pastoral care, she felt a very strong push to go back to Church Ministry.
Kelly looks forward to serving Park Church and is incredibly grateful to have found this “diamond in the rough” for her family to worship and to continue her ministry.
In addition to her work, she enjoys mowing the lawn, riding her motorcycle and bicycle, being on or by the water, and going on dates with her wife. She finds extraordinary delight and deep meaning in being with her family.
